Tips for Cooking on Stainless Steel Grills

January 20th, 2010

Cooking on stainless steel grills is popular among many people and the most well-known grilling surface on the market is the stainless steel cooking grates. Cleaning up of any grill can be tedious, but if the necessary preparation is done before the meat is placed on the grill, the cleaning process will surely go smoothly.  These said grates made from stainless steel gas grills, as well as stainless steel charcoal grills need to go through what is called ‘curing and cleaning’ that is an ongoing process. This method of maintenance will keep your grill functioning the best way it can and have it looking always new.

Here are some tips that will help grilling an enjoyable experience.

As mentioned above, there is a process which is done before hand that will keep stainless steel grills at their best; this is known as curing. It is a simple process that includes four easy steps. The first is to clean and wipe down the grate with a sponge or damp dish rag, using warm water to remove any residue. Second, you must coat the top and bottom sides of the grate with a layer of vegetable oil- grilling spray or you may also use shorting as an alternative. When doing this, remember to only use a thin layer and this is the beginning of the curing process.  Thirdly, you then place the grate on your grill and start a small fire, using charcoal of light burners, if using a gas grill. The last step of this process is heating the grill to about 300 degrees and keeping it at this temperature for an hour or two. This allows the oil to create a protective layer on the grate, which makes it a very important part.

These next steps should be done before, during, and after grilling using stainless steel grills.

Once the coals or burners are lit thoroughly, you should then close the lid and allow the chamber to heat up. Let this last for at least ten minutes to desired temperature, which should you should base on the type of meat you plan on grilling. Once this is done, go on and place the meat on the stainless steel barbecue grill and begin grilling. Once you are done removing the meat, make sure you clean as well as scrub the left over food and char, using a wired frill brush. See to it that you do this when the grill is still hot, to keep the dirt and grease from hardening. Then once again, spray the grate with a layer of vegetable oil to keep it lubricated until the next use. Put these steps to practice and you will surely have a great looking, as well as functioning, stainless steel grill.
